IDEAS Book Group: Hidden Figures

The May book for the IDEAS book group (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Sustainability) is Hidden Figures by Margot Lee Shetterly.  The subtitle says it all: The American Dream and the Untold Story of the Black Women Mathematicians Who Helped Win the Space Race.  Just before the beginning of the computer age, these formerly unsung heroes made possible the early launches of the first astronauts.  As women and African-Americans, there were two strikes against them in the man's world of NASA.  It's important to remember that in 1961, this country was still segregated and working women were relegated to traditional jobs, if employed at all.
