Event Details

This class will explain genealogical research methods for those whose ancestors may not appear in census documents:  African-Americans, Indigenous peoples, and Mexican-Americans. Instructors are members of the Black Family Genealogy and History Society and representatives of the Family History Library at the Mesa Temple Visitors Center.

Children 18 and under must be accompanied by parent or guardian.  

Please bring a laptop or tablet.  We have a limited number of laptops available for those who need one. 

Schedule

Week one: Necessary documents will be provided for attendees, as well as instructions for filling them out.  

Week two: Participants will learn how to use FamilySearch.

Week three: Participants will learn how to search Ancestry.com and Heritage Quest for their surnames of interest.  Instructors will answer questions and introduce the need for a research log.  They will also reinforce the importance of documenting research. 

Week four: Check-in with class participants to see the results of their research. Assistance with navigation problems will be provided. 

Week five: Wrap up and review of the previous 4 sessions. Please note this class will take place in THINKspot@RM, not the Program Room.
